Spanish wines were the talk of the town in Copenhagen on September 28th. The New Wines From Spain event, which was organized by ICEX and Spain’s Economic and Commercial Office in Denmark, welcomed 34 Spanish wineries.
Coming from all over the country—from Murcia and Madrid to Pontevedra and Navarre—attendees were delighted to have the opportunity to sample wines from such a wide range of areas, many of them hitherto unknown to Danish consumers.
Only trade professionals, such as importers, sommeliers, chefs, distributors, retailers, etc., were invited, the majority of which viewed the event as very positive due to the quality of the wines showcased and the innovation put on display by participating wineries. There were able to sample the wines, which were accompanied by a selection of top-quality Spanish food products. The wineries in attendance also gave the event top marks due to the large number of contacts they were able to make.
Denmark is an interesting market for Spanish wines, as Spain ranks fourth in terms of wine imports. Moreover, average prices increased slightly, due to the increasing popularity of high-quality wines from various DOs, including Valencia, La Rioja and Cava. Organic wines are also seeing a slight boom among Danish consumers, and Spanish wineries that operate in that niche are benefitting from growing interest.
Participating wineries and trade professionals all viewed the experience favorably
