Sommelier Wine Awards Highlight Spanish Wines

At least six Spanish sherries were among the Spanish wines that took home the SWA Gold awards at the 2017 Sommelier Wine Awards, an annual competition that recognizes the best wines available to the UK hospitality sector.

There were plenty of gold medals to go around for Spanish wines at the most recent edition of the British Sommelier Wine Awards, with this top distinction bestowed on a wide variety of Spanish wines representing the following regions: Jerez, Catalonia, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Rías Baixas, Monterrei, Bierzo, Basque Country (Txakolí), Navarre, Valencia, La Mancha, Pla i Llevant, Madrid, Rioja and Castile-León.

Among these gold-medal winners – chosen though a blind tasting – there were three Spanish wines that received additional accolades: Dominio de Atauta, Parada de Atauta, 2014 from DO Ribera del Duero was the recipient of the "Critics Choice Award"; while Pinna Fidelis Crianza, 2012, also from DO Ribera del Duero, won the "Food Match" trophy, as did Quinta del Obispo, Mencía, 2015, from DO Bierzo.
